Birthstone of the Month (February) - Amethyst

O hushed October morning mild, Begin the hours of this day slow, Make the day seem to us less brief... Retard the sun with gentle mist; Enchant the land with amethyst.” – Robert Frost

What an amazing gemstone! Amethyst is the birthstone for those born in the month of February. Besides, it is presented to celebrate the 6th and 17th anniversaries of marriage. It is also the zodiac sign for the constellation of Pisces. Amethyst is most commonly recognized to be in shades of purple which range from a light pinkish violet, deep purple, red or blue, depending on the light. Interestingly, it derives its colour from the iron impurities contained in the stone.

February’s birthstone is believed to have tremendous healing properties which may help a great deal with headaches, arthritis, addictions, insomnia, pain relief, circulatory system and general healing. So much so that there is a belief that the name Amethyst originates from the Greek words meaning ‘not drunk’. Amethyst  is also believed to impart qualities like stability, peace, balance,  courage, sincerity, calm and inner strength. People wear jewellery featuring Amethyst for protection and good luck.

The Egyptians believed that the Amethyst possessed good powers and placed the stones in the tombs of pharaohs. In Arabian mythology, the Amethyst gemstone was supposed to protect the wearer from bad dreams. Amethyst stone often occurs within the craters of granitic rocks. It originates all over the globe including Canada, Brazil, Uruguay, Arizona, North Carolina, and Zambia. One of the largest mines in the world is Maissau in Amethyst that is actually open to the public!

Amethyst is one of the most popular and affordable gemstones. It can be worn to mark formal occasions or used for everyday wear. Amethyst makes elegant pieces of jewellery like pendants, necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings. At Hep Audrey, we have an amazing selection of Amethyst jewellery. It is believed that St. Valentine wore an Amethyst ring with an image of Cupid!
