Barcelona – the City Built by Art

Founder's Note: Here at Hep Audrey, we want to help you 'Be your sparkly best'! In this spirit, we enjoy publishing opinions and perspectives from accomplished women who are experts in their fields. Here, the lovely Verity recommends Barcelona as a top holiday destination for the summer!

For centuries jewellery has been bought to mark memorable moments in life, such as engagements and birthdays, as it transports you back to that special time when you look at it. When I first saw the Aurora Sparkling Geometric Peridot and Amethyst Earrings (£115) and Necklace (£120) on Hep Audrey I was transported back to my long weekend in Barcelona, the art-filled city in North-Eastern Spain. The piece’s geometric shapes and beautiful colours teamed with their elegance are reminiscent of the work of the famous Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi, whose vision helped create Barcelona.

Barcelona was Gaudi’s playground and the city is a testament to his creative talents; he was inspired by natural forms and created not only buildings but also ceramics, stained glass and ironwork. His most famous building is the Sagrada Família which is a remarkable church in the centre of Barcelona which must truly be seen to be believed. Gaudi started to design the church in 1883 and by his death in 1926 it was only 25% complete, work is still ongoing and won’t be completed until 2026 which shows the scale of detail in his design! Be warned, you will have to queue for a long time to get in, but it’s worth the wait.

My favourite place in Barcelona is Parc Güell; a gorgeous park designed by Gaudi where benches, walls, statues and buildings are covered in multi coloured mosaic tiles and higgledy-piggledy paths lead you around this magical garden in the middle of the city – you could spend hours sitting eating ice cream and enjoying this peaceful colour drenched place. After walking around marvelling at the architecture around the city you’ll be thirsty so stop for a Tinto de Verano, Sangría or Orxata/Horchata (milky drink made of nuts) and watch the world go by from a pavement cafe. You will have built up an appetite as well and one thing you can’t miss out on during a trip to Barcelona is the food; as you walk through the streets the smell of tapas makes your mouth water whilst the sight of large portions of paella are a feast for the eyes (and stomach!), so make sure you stop and indulge in what there is on offer.

Although the city itself holds plenty to do, if you need time relaxing then Barcelona has a gorgeous beach as well. You can spend the afternoons relaxing on a sun lounger looking out to the Balearic Sea whilst reminiscing about all you’ve seen and done in this spectacular European city. On a practical note, Barcelona has two airports which you can fly into, El Prat or Girona. Getting around is simple too, you can either walk or jump on the metro (which also connects to El Prat airport). Flights are available from across the UK so book your ticket and experience this vibrant city! Make the memories for your jewellery to remind you of.
